The coming days have a lot to offer in terms of weather, variety is provided. In addition to the wind, this also includes the much-needed precipitation. The temperatures and the snow line ride roller coaster.
Stormy afternoon and evening
As forecast, the wind continued to increase in the past hours and reached its strongest phase in the course of the afternoon. Even now in the evening, strong to gale-force southwesterly winds continue to blow, with gale-force gusts still present on the mountains. In terms of category, this event was comparable to that of the night before last. In the lowlands, the gust peaks were widely between 60 and 80 km/h, locally 80 to 100 km/h were reached. In Cressier it was even 112 km/h, in Einsiedeln a hurricane gust of 121 km/h was registered!
As expected, there were again heavy gale-force winds on the mountains. And also as expected, the Säntis with 140 km/h is again in the top field. This time, however, it shares "only" third place with La Dôle. With 150 km/h, Moléson was in the top position for a long time, but it lost this position shortly before 18:30 to Jungfraujoch. This is now in front with 169 km/h! Possibly there will be changes in the ranking in the next one or two hours.

Already in the morning gale-force winds!
Also today, Friday, the wind will once again draw attention to itself. The southwesterly to westerly wind freshens up strongly, in the lowlands wind peaks of 60 to 80 km/h are to be expected, on elevated and exposed locations even more (Fig. 1). On the mountains, gale-force winds are likely to be registered at several stations.

However, these gale-force winds will not be long in coming; already this morning a gale-force gust of 137 km/h was recorded on the Bantiger (947 m a.s.l.). Also on the Moléson (2002 m a.s.l.), the La Dôle (1677 m a.s.l.) and the Wildspitz (1580 m a.s.l.) the mark of 118 km/h was also cracked.

By Saturday morning, the wind weakens again, and on the weekend itself, the wind tends to become a side issue again. Instead, the precipitation amounts move into focus, until Sunday evening, partly large precipitation amounts and especially in the Valais a lot of fresh snow is expected. Details can be found here.
Hit list of last night's wind peaks
A turbulent and wet night is behind us. It brought gale-force winds in the lowlands and gale-force winds on the mountains. Top of the list is the Säntis with 145 km/h ahead of the Pilatus with 143 km/h. At the colleagues of Meteoschweiz (Zurich-Fluntern) the wind peak was 109 km/h. However, there were problems with the readings during the night, so the following list is only provisional for now. We will update it again during the day, if necessary.

This morning, strong southwesterly to westerly winds are still blowing, on the mountains it is still stormy. During the day, however, the wind will subside at all altitudes. The last rain showers will move eastward, the gaps in the clouds will increase. With wind and sun, it will be spring-like mild, the maxima are between 14 and 17 degrees.
Small low pressure system ensures restless night
In the coming night hours, a small marginal low named Diethelm will move eastward over the center of Germany towards the Czech Republic and Poland. Switzerland lies on the southern edge in the area of the strong wind field. By the hour, the wind has already freshened up strongly. In the lowlands, the strongest gusts reached around 90 km/h, for example in Niedergösgen. On the mountains, gale-force winds of locally over 140 km/h have been measured. On the Säntis it was 145 km/h, on the Pilatus 142 km/h so far. More readings can be found below in the hit list and on our readings map.
Duringthe night, the wind will now reach its peak. At lower altitudes with gusts between 70 and 100 km/h, on the mountains locally with over 150 km/h. In addition, thunder and lightning is also possible during the night, as somewhat colder air flows in the higher layers to the northern side of the Alps. Tomorrow, Thursday, the wind will temporarily decrease. On Friday, there will again be winds with similar strengths as in the coming night. The next update will follow tomorrow here in the Meteoticker.
Strongest wind gusts (as of 21:00)
Some rain, a lot of wind
Yesterday evening and last night, there was initial precipitation in the west and south, with more to follow today. In the afternoon, it will remain cloudy in the north, raining from time to time. The snow line was still at 700 to 1000 meters in the morning, but now rises to 1500 to 1900 meters. The amounts and intensities are kept within limits, it also does not get wet everywhere. The main actor is the wind, it continues to freshen up and already reaches gust peaks of 50 to 70 km/h in the plateau. On the mountains it is stormy, in exposed summit and ridge locations first hurricane-force gusts are possible.
Embedded in an extended low-pressure zone, a partial low-pressure system moves eastward over Germany during the night, with somewhat cooler and unstably stratified air in tow. As a result, the downpours will become more frequent and heavier, with occasional lightning and thunder. The snow line will drop to around 1500 meters by morning. The wind also continues to increase and reaches a temporary maximum during the night with gusts of 60 to 80 km/h in the lowlands – in open areas also somewhat more. On the mountains wind gusts reach velocities of 100 to 140 km/h.
Partially sunny, slowly decreasing wind
Thursday will start with cloudy to partly wet weather, but in the course of the morning the showers will decrease and move eastward. Subsequently, the clouds will clear up, and in the afternoon and early evening the sun will be able to shine for a while. In the morning, a strong southwesterly to westerly wind will continue to blow, on the mountains it will be stormy, but in the course of the afternoon the wind will gradually decrease. The combination of wind and sun will provide spring-like temperatures, with maxima between 14 and 16 degrees. Due to local lee effects, it may become even milder in some places!

Further downpours, second wind maximum
In the night to Friday and on Friday itself, the next push of humid air will follow, an intense low pressure system will move from the English Channel towards the Benelux countries and Germany. As a result, clouds thicken during the night, new downpours spread. On Friday, it will rain repeatedly with interruptions, in between clearings are possible. The snow line will be in the range of 1300 to 1500 meters. The wind will pick up again and become strong to stormy. In the lowlands, 60 to 80 km/h will be reached, on the mountains there will be hurricane-force gusts again in exposed locations.

Temporarily decreasing snow line
In the night to Saturday, colder air will reach us from the north, the snow line will drop below 1000 meters. On Saturday morning, flakes from 500 meters upward are possible on the northern edge as well as in the northeast, but then the precipitation will also subside. The precipitation focus is along the Alps and in the west. During the day, precipitation will also tend to decrease here, but in detail there are still differences between the various computer models. In the night to Sunday and on Sunday itself, it will be wet at times, the snow line will rise again significantly. According to the latest documents, the precipitation amounts have reduced, especially for Saturday, but nevertheless, over the entire period, notable amounts of rain and snow accumulate.

Fig. 3: Precipitation total from noon today until Sunday evening; Source: MeteoNews, Ubimet
From today until Sunday evening, 20 to 40 mm will result in the lowlands, along the Alps it will be 60 to 80 mm. In the Valais, 100 to 120 mm are locally possible, above 2000 meters this would be 1 to 1.5 meters of new snow. Towards the east, the amounts are probably somewhat smaller, nevertheless, it is in the high altitudes a decent increase in fresh snow! But this is always in combination with a lot of wind, the avalanche danger increases accordingly. In the middle layers, rain falls at times, which together with the wind does not do the snow cover good – even if it snows again later.
